In case the required blood units have not been filed for the patient until the day of surgery, the Clinical Hematology/ Blood Transfusion Department may postpone the planned surgery. Blood Platelets Removal

All the patients who are to be operated, must have secured at least one suitable platelets donor 10 days before the surgery. The donors’ turnout at the OCSC Clinical Hematology / Blood Transfusion is from 08:00 to 15:00.

The applicant donors visit first the OCSC Clinical Hematology / Blood Transfusion, where their medical record is taken and an eligibility approval is given. In case of unsuitability, the prospective donor is immediately informed. The appropriateness or not of donors, is defined by the instructions of the Hellenic Society of Hematology Blood Transfusion, as well as from the international and American guidelines regarding who can become a platelet donor.

If the candidate donor is eligible, the donor is informed about the platelets removal process. At that point, he/she goes to the Outpatient Department, where a number of laboratory examinations are performed to further hematologically determine his/her suitability to donate blood for the platelets acquirement. If the donor is rejected, or the virological testing proves to be positive or if he/she is found with low platelet count, anemia or disorder of white blood cells, the prospective donor is informed by telephone.

Suitable donors are notified within eight (8) days from the day of the laboratory examination to come for the platelets removal process.
